Summer JAZZ

After Auditions on May 31st in the Cary Arts Center, aspiring jazz students will be placed into two ensembles. The more advanced group, Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble (TYJE), will begin weekly rehearsals with Gregg Gelb on June 1 in the Raleigh Boychoir building.

The Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble II (TYJE II) will begin rehearsing on June 15 with director, Lisa Burn.

TYJE will have the opportunity to participate in a clinic given by the Dixieland band, Second Line Stompers, on June 15 and to open the "Uncle" Paul Father's Day Concert at 6:30 (see article below).

The ensembles will share a concert at the Cary Arts Center on Monday, August 11.

Jazz Summer Sessions

Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble

The Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble (TYJE) is the most advanced jazz group sponsored by the Philharmonic Association and is directed by Dr. Gregg Gelb. It is open to advanced jazz musicians, grades 8 - 12, who play saxophone, trumpet, trombone, guitar, piano, string bass, drums, or sing. The summer session includes weekly rehearsals, a clinic with the Dixieland band Second Line Stompers, and a final performance in Cary Arts Center Theatre on August 11.

Auditions for participation will be by appointment on Saturday, May 31 from 9:30 am - 12:30 pm.

About TYJE’s Director: Dr. Gregg Gelb is a recipient of a Jazz Composers Award from the North Carolina Arts Council and fourRegional Artist grants from the Fayetteville/Cumberland County Arts Council. In addition to leading his Jazz Quartet, 8-piece Swing Band, La Fiesta Latin Jazz Band and the 2nd Line Stompers, he is founder and director of the Heart of Carolina Jazz Orchestra and Jazz Society, and co-founder and player with the North Carolina Jazz Repertory Orchestra. He is an adjunct professor at Central Carolina Community College, Fayetteville St. University, and St. Augustine’s University. He has been an Interim Assistant Professor of Jazz at Francis Marion University, UNC Greensboro, NC State and UNC Chapel Hill, taught band in Wake County and was a Visiting Artist in the North Carolina Community Colleges. He has a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Berklee College of Music, a Master of Music degree from the UNC School of the Arts, and a DMA from UNC Greensboro.

Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble II

It is open to intermediate jazz musicians, grades 6 - 12, who play saxophone, trumpet, trombone, guitar, piano, string bass, drums, or sing. The summer session includes weekly rehearsals and a final performance in Cary Arts Center Theatre on August 11.

About TYJE II’s Director: Lisa Burn is a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music in Trumpet Performance. Upon graduation, she joined the Winnipeg Symphony in Canada. While there, she devel- oped a successful private trumpet studio and was frequently engaged as a trumpet clinician for area music educators. Upon returning to her native North Carolina in 2003, she accepted a posi- tion as band director at Franklin Academy in Wake Forest and developed both the concert and jazz bands to levels of distinction. Lisa currently maintains an active schedule as a trumpeter, per- forming as a freelance professional and serving as principal cornet of the Triangle Brass Band, as well as a private instructor and music education consultant for the Triangle area. Ms. Burn's most recent appointment is with the Rodney Mack Philadelphia Big Brass, per- forming with both the Big Brass and Brass Quintet throughout the United States.
