Meeting Minutes September 5 2017

Apex Middle School Band Boosters

Meeting Minutes

September 5, 2017

President Jennifer Forsberg called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.

Band Director Notes:

Update on Classrooms: Mrs. Bishop handed out instrument name tags to the parents of 6th graders. She reported that the 7th and 8th graders have begun playing with a focus on tone. 6th graders have begun to use their instruments.

Benefit of Band Boosters: Mrs. Bishop talked about how the Band Boosters assist the band, e.g. providing funds to buy cleaning supplies for the instruments that are given to students who are unable to purchase one themselves.

Smartmusic: Mrs. Bishop anticipates 6th graders will begin using this program in about a month. It is a music education program that is now all online. Users can choose Apex Middle School and it will include the method book along with other method books. Students can also use it for different instruments so a family can use one membership. Each student can do their assessments through Smartmusic and this will allow the student to complete the assessment as many times as he/she wishes to give their best attempt.

Help Needed: Mrs. Bishop is installing a slat wall in the Band Room and needs assistance putting it up in the evening or on a Saturday. Please let her know if you are able to help.

Upcoming Events:

September 16 -- Collage – This event is specifically geared toward 8th graders. It is an opportunity for bands around the State to get together and play. It will be held at Meymandi Hall this year. It will be open to 7th graders only if there are open slots after all 8th graders have responded.

September 19 and 20 – Jazz Band Auditions

September 20 – October 4 -- Bandathon Fundraiser – A donation form will be sent home with the students. They are tax deductible donations. There will be incentives for students to reach goals, e.g. $25 of donations and the student will get a copy of a picture taken at the party, $40 of donations and the student will participate in a pizza party, $100 of donations and the student will have the opportunity to conduct the band.

October 6, 3 p.m. – 8 p.m. -- Bandathon Party – This event will require parent volunteers. There will be snacks, games and a raffle. Each of these parts of the party will have assigned volunteers. Each band member will have an opportunity to play separately and together. The raffle items will mostly be small items that are donated by parents.

October 24 – All County Band Auditions

Open Positions: Jennifer Forsberg noted that the following positions are filled:

Treasurer: Dawne Gauldi

Spirit Wear: Kristin Bailey and Cathy Wurst

Volunteer Coordinator: Jan White

Historian: Mike Rasp

Jennifer also reviewed the list of positions that are open. She stated that much of the processes for the positions are already in place. Jennifer asked for volunteers for the following positions:

Communications: ensures Band information is communicated to band parents through the use of emails, Facebook and a website.

Secretary: taking minutes at meetings.

Fundraising Coordinator: We have two fundraisers this year. Most of the logistics are already in place, we just need someone to coordinate the overall efforts of each fundraiser, i.e. Fall Bandathon and Spring Cookie Dough Fundraiser.

Treasure Report: Dawne reported that the current balance for the Band Boosters is $3,254.27. There are budgeted amounts for expected expenses. Parents should first ensure that the Treasurer is aware of the upcoming expense and then submit a payment/reimbursement form.

Sprit Wear: Kristin stated that tee shirt order forms will be sent home soon. 7th and 8th graders are required to get a sweatshirt.

Next Meeting: October 3, 7 p.m., Band Room
